This is one of the most inspiring sea turtle projects we’ve ever come across, mostly because the people involved are incredibly passionate about what they do. This is a research-based sea turtle conservation project on the island of Kefalonia, Greece. Hands-on learning is a big focus throughout, giving volunteers practical experience across a wide range of ecological research and conservation practices, including the legal and social aspects, which are often the most debated parts of conservation work.

Since 2012, this awesome project on the Greek island of Kefalonia has been hands-on with conservation and research. While helping protect sea turtles, the team has also tracked how beach landscapes change over time due to human activity and environmental shifts. Because sea turtles rely on both coastal and marine habitats, the project has expanded to include research on Posidonia oceanica, a protected type of seagrass, and the local sand dune systems, which are listed as vulnerable on the Red List. These habitats aren’t just important for nesting and feeding endangered turtles. They’re also vital indicators of climate change and much more.

Dreaming of island life and making an impact? Join a small but passionate animal shelter on the beautiful island of Chios, where around 20 to 35 rescued dogs and cats are given a second chance at life. Many have been abandoned, mistreated, or fallen ill and some may call the shelter home forever.
