The project for the blind and visually impaired in Suriname supports the development of individuals with visual impairments and enables them to become independent members of society. This is achieved through a dedicated team of professionals who collaborate closely with stakeholders to provide quality education, adequate care, and expert guidance. Through effective public awareness campaigns, they work to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with visual impairments in society.
The activities volunteers can engage in are aligned with the project's objectives and are quite varied. For example, tasks may include:
A workday typically runs from 08:00am to 01:00pm, or from 02:00pm to 07:00pm. There is a work schedule, and volunteers will agree on their tasks.

The management team is led by a director. The rest of the staff includes 30 permanent employees, around 20 local volunteers, and temporary interns and international volunteers.
Dutch is also spoken in Suriname.
There are occasionally special holidays. Volunteers can decide how to spend those days and are free to join in any special events or celebrations happening locally.
The volunteer house is well-secured and features Wi-Fi, a laundry area, kitchen, swimming pool and common areas for relaxing. Rooms have air conditioning, a wardrobe, and a double bed. Bathrooms and toilets with both hot and cold water are available. Not all rooms have a private bathroom and toilet. Rooms are not shared unless volunteers specifically request it. A housekeeper is available in the volunteer house.
Volunteers typically travel by bicycle or public transport.
If you’ve got a bit of extra room in your luggage and would like to bring something for the project, it’s greatly appreciated! Just check in with us first so we can advise on what’s most useful.
We use a trusted taxi service with a regular driver we’ve made clear arrangements with. Volunteers provide their name and flight number beforehand, and we stay in regular contact with the driver. Volunteers arrive at Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport (Zanderij).

Rita is your main contact in Suriname. She’s a passionate 57-year-old woman who is patient, reliable, warm-hearted, loving, persistent, determined, peaceful, and safety-conscious. She’s also a proud mum of two adult sons.
Her background is in financial administration, but she currently works as a clinic assistant in the endoscopy department at a hospital, supporting the gastroenterology (GI) specialist.
In her spare time, she runs a reading centre where she supports young people with homework and much more. Rita is also the local contact person for Volunteer Worldwide.
In short: an amazing woman with strong willpower, focus, and total dedication.
This project is for volunteers who want to support the development of people with visual impairments. You’ll assist in the education and care of blind and visually impaired students at the Louis Braille School, and support activities and physiotherapy sessions.
This project is open to volunteers aged 17 and up.
