About the project

Working Hours

You will work Monday to Friday from 8:00am to 12:00pm. In the afternoons, you will have time to prepare lessons or engage in another project. If your internship requires additional hours, this can certainly be arranged.

Colleagues / Who You Will Work With

You will occasionally collaborate with other enthusiastic volunteers dedicated to this project. Our local contact person, who is also the school’s director, is always available to support you. Additionally, there are always young people eager to help organise activities. Involving the children in this process is a fantastic experience, and their engagement makes it even more enjoyable.

Language Spoken at the Project

The primary language spoken is English. Naturally, the older the children are, the better their English proficiency. However, there are always teachers available to assist with translation if needed.

Holiday Periods

This project runs year-round. Even during holiday periods, there is plenty of activity at the Kidz Active school. While the program may vary slightly during these times, there is still a lot to do, especially in sports, as many children continue to attend school. This offers an opportunity to adapt the program and creatively organise sports activities that suit the holiday period.

Accommodation

In Ghana, you will stay with a host family or in your own hut in a traditional village. This is the perfect way to immerse yourself in Ghanaian life and culture. With a host family, you will have your own room, while sharing facilities like the bathroom and toilet with the rest of the family. You will receive three meals a day, and the family will do everything they can to ensure you have an unforgettable experience. Please note, the accommodation is much more basic than what you might be used to in the Netherlands.

Transport to and from the Project

You will travel to the project using a Yellow, which is a type of tuk-tuk. If you are staying with a traditional host family near Sylvester, you can walk to the school for sports lessons.

Materials the Project Could Use

If you have extra space in your luggage and would like to bring something for the project, it would be greatly appreciated. Please consult with us to determine which items would be most useful and appropriate to bring.

Pickup Service

In Ghana, our pickup service will meet you in Accra. Jennifer will be waiting at the airport with a sign bearing your name and will give you a warm welcome. You will stay one night in Accra, and she will arrange a bus or plane ticket for your journey to Tamale. In Tamale, our contact person Sylvester will pick you up.

We will also arrange your return trip. You will have another overnight stay with Jennifer, ensuring you are well-rested for your journey home the next day. Please note, these costs are not included in the program price.

Explore additional trips to see what you can do in your free time. We have some truly wonderful excursions available. Since you are already in such a beautiful destination, it is a great opportunity to see more of the country.

We are seeking enthusiastic volunteers who are passionate about sports and youth development. Suitable for Volunteers Aged 18 and Above

This project is open to young volunteers aged 18 and above, as well as individuals aged 50 and above.

Essential Qualities

Passion for Sports and Youth Development

We are looking for volunteers who have a love for sports and enjoy working with children and young people. Experience as a coach, sports instructor, or in a similar role is advantageous, but an enthusiastic and motivated attitude is the most important.

Initiative and Proactivity

The ability to work independently and take initiative is essential. You should be capable of organising sports activities and training sessions, and devising creative solutions for any challenges. A proactive approach ensures effective contribution to the project.

Patience

Working with young people requires a considerable amount of patience. Each child has their own learning style and pace. It is important to remain patient, even if progress seems slow. Your patience can make a significant difference in the self-confidence and skills of the young people.

Cultural Sensitivity

Working in a different cultural context requires respect and understanding of local customs and traditions. Openness and a willingness to learn from the culture in which you work are crucial for successful collaboration and a positive experience for both you and the community.

Flexibility and Adaptability

Conditions in Ghana can differ greatly from what you are accustomed to. Flexibility and the ability to adapt to new situations are therefore important. This applies to both the physical living conditions and the sports facilities.

Good communication skills are essential, both in interactions with young people and with your colleagues and the local community. The ability to communicate clearly and respectfully contributes to a positive and productive sports environment.

Average cost for a 5 week stay = $411/week

• 1 Week of Volunteering: $675
