WELCOME, ORIENTATION AND CULTURAL FOUNDATIONS
You’ll arrive at the host family’s home, where the local coordinators will be waiting for you with big smiles and maybe even a little dance. You’ll be introduced to your host family, who’ll be ready to welcome you with open arms. We’ll kick things off with a bit of cultural training, because it’s good to know what the taboos are (spoiler: always be respectful to elders, and there are quite a few etiquette rules). You’ll also get a glimpse into how local families are structured, from the wise grandparents to the cheeky little ones running around the house. Everything you need to feel at home will be covered.
TRADITIONAL COOKING PRACTICES AND FOOD PREPARATION
Time to roll up your sleeves. We start with the basics: gathering ingredients. Think fresh veggies from the garden, or even chicken, which you might help prepare yourself. Everything is done with deep respect for nature and the food we eat. You’ll learn how to cook Ugali (the star of Tanzanian cuisine) and bake fragrant local bread. Then comes the highlight, eating together. Everyone sits down to a shared meal, and you’ll feel just how special it is to enjoy something you helped prepare.
TRADITIONAL BEER-MAKING TECHNIQUES AND LOCAL DRINKS
Now it’s time for the village cocktail bar experience. You’ll learn how to make traditional drinks like bamboo sap brews and other local specialties. You’ll go through the whole process step by step, including fermentation and tasting. While the drinks are brewing, the community gathers to enjoy, and stories are shared about the meaning and traditions behind them. Expect lots of laughter, tales of ancestors, and maybe even another dance or two.
VILLAGE WALK, HOME EXPLORATION AND CULTURAL IMMERSION
We’ll head out on a walking adventure through the village. You’ll visit local markets, spiritual sites, and places only the locals know about. If you’re lucky, you might even witness a local ceremony, an unforgettable experience. Elders of the village share wisdom, stories, and fascinating taboos that’ll leave you wide-eyed and wanting to know more.
GIVING BACK DAY AND PROGRAM WRAP-UP
This is your chance to give back. Whether it’s helping repair a home, donating school supplies, or painting a much-needed wall, your efforts big or small, can make a world of difference. And how do we finish? With a celebration, of course. The village throws a farewell party with music, dancing and amazing food, giving you a chance to share your stories and memories with your new friends.
EXTRA ACTIVITIES AND LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
Keen to learn even more? There are plenty of extras. From craft workshops (weaving, pottery, beadwork) to joining in on the farm or helping with eco-projects like tree planting and river clean-ups. You might even get the chance to run an English class or share your first aid knowledge.
The Volunteers Family Visit program in Iringa goes far beyond a typical trip, it’s a cultural exchange filled with learning, laughter, and connection. The price for this adventure is $185 for two days and one overnight stay.
