This project, located in Iringa, Tanzania, is an essential institution focused on providing education and personal development for children with hearing impairments. Hearing issues are often not taken seriously, and there is limited access to specialist resources. As a result, many children in Tanzania struggle to find a school that offers the support they desperately need. The mission is clear: to bridge the gap between the current challenges in learning, communication, and vocational skills, so these children can prepare for an independent and fulfilling life as valuable members of society.
The project provides an environment specifically designed to meet the needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing children. The teachers are trained in Tanzanian Sign Language (TSL) and use creative, visual, and kinesthetic learning methods. This project is not just about academics, but also about strengthening social skills, professional abilities, and emotional resilience. Students are given the tools they need to overcome obstacles and realise their dreams.
This approach ensures that the children not only gain knowledge but also develop confidence and learn to advocate for themselves. They are prepared for a future where they can thrive, not just survive.

I’ve had an amazing time here and would definitely recommend Tanzania to anyone. It’s so different from back home, and through the projects you can share your skills with the local community while learning just as much from them.
You generally work from Monday to Friday, from 9:00am to 3:00pm. This may vary slightly depending on which school you work at and whether you combine projects.
You work alongside teachers and other volunteers.
English is the main language used on the project. Since the people here are generally well educated, most speak reasonably good English.
Volunteers are welcome all year round. However, there is a long holiday in January when schools and this project are closed.
At the volunteer house, there is a kitchen where volunteers can prepare their own meals using food bought at the market. Our housekeeper can also cook meals for you. We have a fridge and plenty of kitchen utensils. Volunteers can also dine at one of the many nearby restaurants. For volunteers who prefer to stay with host families and cook together with them, this is possible. Usually, however, host families will cook for the volunteers.
Currently, there is no WiFi, but a SIM card can be bought for less than half a US dollar, and unlimited 4G internet can be added for less than 8 Australian dollars per week or about 30 Aussie dollars per month. There are separate bedrooms (dormitories) for male and female volunteers, and shared common areas and toilets (Western-style toilets).
Living conditions are basic, and power outages are common in Tanzania. Most rural village homes do not have running water, especially during dry periods. Bottled water is widely available for drinking. Laundry is done by volunteers by hand or can be done by the housekeeper for a small fee. Bedding (pillows and sheets) is provided, but volunteers are advised to bring their own towels and mosquito nets.
Volunteers walk from the volunteer house to the project or take a public bus (dala dala).
If you have some extra space in your bag and want to bring something for the project, they greatly appreciate it. Please check with us about useful and practical items to bring.
You will be picked up from the airport. You stay one night in Dar es Salaam. The next day, you will be taken to the bus station and travel by bus to Iringa with someone from the organisation. Then you go to the volunteer house where you can relax, unpack, and meet other volunteers. You will also get an introduction to the project.
We can organise your return trip as well. These costs are not included in the price. The arrival transfer is included. For the return trip with a hotel stay, the cost is $150

The projects in Tanzania are especially suited for volunteers aged between 17 and 29. For volunteers who are older, the project in Ilula is a better fit.

Flexibility and Adaptability: Conditions in Tanzania can be very different from what you are used to. Flexibility and the ability to adapt to new situations are therefore important. This applies both to physical living conditions and the work environment.
Communication Skills: Good communication skills are essential, both in contact with the children and with your colleagues and the local community. The ability to communicate clearly and respectfully contributes to a positive and productive working environment.
