General Information

This project, located in Iringa, Tanzania, is an essential institution focused on providing education and personal development for children with hearing impairments. Hearing issues are often not taken seriously, and there is limited access to specialist resources. As a result, many children in Tanzania struggle to find a school that offers the support they desperately need. This project is a beacon of hope, a place that provides opportunities for these children, aiming to empower them through tailored education and the development of essential life skills.

The mission is clear: to bridge the gap between the current challenges in learning, communication, and vocational skills, so these children can prepare for an independent and fulfilling life as valuable members of society.

The project provides an environment specifically designed to meet the needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing children. The teachers are trained in Tanzanian Sign Language (TSL) and use creative, visual, and kinesthetic learning methods. This project is not just about academics, but also about strengthening social skills, professional abilities, and emotional resilience. Students are given the tools they need to overcome obstacles and realise their dreams.

This approach ensures that the children not only gain knowledge but also develop confidence and learn to advocate for themselves. They are prepared for a future where they can thrive, not just survive.

Volunteers play a vital role in this project. They bring fresh insights, ideas, and practical skills, and the children feel recognised when special volunteers from overseas, such as from the Netherlands, come to support them. By joining this project, you'll have the chance to make a direct impact on the lives of these children while also growing through intercultural exchange and hands-on experiences. It’s a unique opportunity to learn about the challenges that deaf individuals in Tanzania face daily, and how you can make a difference in their lives.

While working with this group might initially seem challenging, volunteers repeatedly find it incredibly rewarding and enjoyable. They have a fantastic time, love interacting with the kids, and find it immensely valuable to contribute to their development. It’s an experience you won’t forget!

Because it was so much fun on the project and with the other volunteers, we even extended our stay by a week. If you’re unsure about going, we would definitely recommend it!!!

I’ve had an amazing time here and would definitely recommend Tanzania to anyone. It’s so different from back home, and through the projects you can share your skills with the local community while learning just as much from them.
